Three of the Most Common Types of Ants Found in Colorado
While there are several types of ants in Colorado, all species are very social. In fact, they live and work together in very large colonies that use a caste system. Each colony contains workers, soldiers, and reproductives. Of the ants found in Colorado, below is an overview of the three most common types.
Pavement Ants
At approximately 1/8 of an inch in length, pavement ants are quite small. They are dark brown to black in color.
True to their name, these ants can be found nesting between the spaces in pavement and sidewalks as well as in the gaps between landscape pavers and bricks.
Pavement ants will infest homes in search of food.

Carpenter Ants
The largest ants to be found in Colorado, carpenter ants are approximately 1/4 to 5/8 of an inch in length. They are typically black in color but may also be reddish-black in appearance.
Carpenter ants are drawn to wood that is unstained, unpainted, or that has been damaged by water.
Unlike termites, carpenter ants do not eat the wood they infest. Rather they create tunnels to establish nests and hibernation sites.

Sugar Ants
Sugar ants is a term used to describe many species of ants (such as odorous house ants) that have a fondness for sweets but it is also the specific name for the species of ant known as Camponotus consobrinus.
These ants can range in size from 1/16 – 1/2 an inch in length. They have brownish-orange bodies and distinct black heads and hind sections.
While sugar ants do nest outside, they may also establish nests in undisturbed places such as inside walls or in basements.
